View From Up High
Pilot Mountain is one of my most favorite places to visit. It is a beautiful monadnock located in Surry County, North Carolina. It has two features known as Little Pinnacle and Big Pinnacle. Big Pinnacle is also referred to as "The Knob". The views from the top of Pilot Mountain are spectacular and, due to wildlife, weather and seasonal changes, each visit rewards me with new photographic opportunities. The views can extend for miles on a clear day. In the image above, the city of Winston-Salem, NC, can be seen near the upper left horizon. The city appears as a white, faint line, but with noticeable, differentiating heights in buildings. The distance from Pilot Mountain to Winston-Salem is a little over 26 miles.
For those of you who like to camp, Pilot Mountain is a state park with campgrounds. In addition, the town of Mount Airy, birthplace of Andy Griffith, is just a few miles away. For anyone passing through the western part of North Carolina, I highly recommend getting off the main thoroughfare, driving up a steep and winding road, and taking a little time to visit this very special place. For me, it's one of the most beautiful spots in God's creation.
